High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound(HIFU)

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound(HIFU) for Face and Neck

November 29, 2024

HIFU for the Face (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) is a non-invasive procedure based on focused ultrasound energy to heat the deep layers of the skin and underlying tissue. HIFU is used in facial lifting, tightening, and rejuvenation.

How does HIFU Work:

  • Ultrasound Energy: HIFU delivers targeted focused ultrasound waves to deep layers of the skin, without affecting the epidermis. Ultrasound energy encourages the tissue, to promote collagen production.
  • Collagen : Collagen gives strength, structure, and elasticity to skin. With ageing, collagen production decreases, leading to dull sagging skin. The ultrasound energy stimulates the body to produce more collagen, resulting in firm, youthful skin.
  • Tightening and Lifting: The heat from the ultrasound causes tissue tightening and lifting, improving the appearance of sagging skin, wrinkles and fine lines.

HIFU transducers control the depth, intensity, and precision of the ultrasound waves.

Types of HIFU Transducers for the Face

HIFU transducers depend on specific area of face being treated, the depth of penetration required, and the level of energy needed. Transducers are designed to focus ultrasound energy at varying depths to stimulate collagen production in the dermal and sub-dermal layers of face. The common types of transducers used in HIFU machine are:

Micro-Transducers (Shallow Depths):

  • Depth:5 mm to 3.0 mm.
  • Target:Upper layers of skin, fine lines, wrinkles, open pores and skin texture improvement.
  • Treatment Areas:For forehead, around the eyes, and the smile lines.
  • Purpose: Improve skin tone, decrease open pores, smoothen texture, and tighten the skin.

Medium Depth Transducers:

  • Depth:5 mm.
  • Target:For facial lifting and tightening, as it reaches the deeper dermal layers and SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) where collagen is produced.
  • Treatment Areas:For lifting the brow, cheeks, and jawline.
  • Purpose:Tighten and lifts the skin by stimulating collagen production at a deeper level.

Deep-Depth Transducers:

  • Depth:7 mm and 13 mm.
  • Target:Subcutaneous fatand muscular layer on body.
  • Treatment Areas:Tummy tuck / Flabby arms
  • Purpose:For a profound lift and tightening/slimming effect on body.

HIFU Transducers key features:

Precision:

  • The transducers precisely focus the ultrasound energy on the targeted tissue layer without affecting surrounding areasto avoid damage to the surface of the skin while stimulating collagen production in the deeper layers.

Multiple Treatment Layers:

  • HIFU targets different depths for comprehensive treatment to address fine lines on the surface and sagging or laxity of deeper tissues.

Adjustable Energy Settings:

  • The energy level of the ultrasound waves can be adjusted to customize treatment according to the patient's comfort and requirement. Higher energy levels give dramatic results, but also cause more discomfort.

Specific HIFU Transducers:

Under-eye Area:

  • A smaller transducer 1.5 mm depth is used for reducing under-eye bags and wrinkles/fine lines around the delicate eye area.

Brow Lift:

  • A 3 mm depth transducer is used in lifting the brows, tighten the skin of forehead, and improve the appearance of droopy eyelids.

Cheeks & Jawline:

  • The 4.5 mm and sometimes deeper 7 mm transducers is used to lift, tighten and contour sagging skin along the cheeks and jawline.

Neck and Chin:

  • 7mm transducers is used for lifting and tightening the neck area to reduce the appearance of a double chin.

Benefits of HIFU treatment for the Face:

  • Non-Surgical: Unlike surgical facelifts, HIFU requires does not require incisions or downtime, making it an attractive treatment with minimal disruption to their lifestyle.
  • Targeted Treatment: HIFU targets specific areas of the face, like jawline, cheeks, neck, and brow.
  • Gradual Results: The complete effect of the treatment is visible after 2 to 3 months, as collagen production increases in the skin. Results can last up to 1–2 years, depending on individual patient factors.
  • Minimal Downtime: Most patients experience little to no downtime. Some may have slight redness or swelling, but this typically resolves within within hours to a day.

Areas Treated with HIFU:

  • Face: For lifting sagging skin around the cheeks, jawline, and brows.
  • Neck: To reduce the appearance of a double chin and tighten loose skin around jawline.
  • Under the Eyes: HIFU can help reduce puffiness and fine lines around eyes.

What to Expect:

  • Before the Treatment: A consultation with a dermatologist is essential to assess the skin ageing and determine the best treatment plan.
  • During the Treatment: The procedure typically takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on the area being treated. Patients may feel mild discomfort while the ultrasound energy is being delivered.
  • After the Treatment: There is typically no downtime, but some patients experience mild redness, swelling, or tingling, which usually disappears in a few hours.

Ideal Candidates:

HIFU is ideal for individuals in their 30s to 40s who are experiencing early signs of aging, such as mild skin laxity. It's not suited for people with very loose or saggy skin that may best respond to more invasive options.

Risks and Side Effects:

  • Mild discomfort during the procedure.
  • Temporary redness or swelling.
  • Rarely, there may be slight numbness or tingling in the treated areas.

Results:

  • Visible improvement is usually seen within 2–3 months after treatment, with optimal results appearing at around 6 months.
  • HIFU results typically last for 1–2 years, but maintenance treatments may be needed for continued skin rejuvenation.
  • HIFU for the face and neck is a safe, non-invasive treatment to rejuvenate the skin, tighten and lift saggy areas, and restore a more youthful appearance. It's ideal for those looking for a non invasive option with minimal downtime.
